Hopto has its fully transistorised and all discrete circuitry based on the classical LA 2A/3A, inheriting the transparent and mild optical compression that works well on vocals. In fact, we would use it real-time in series during a recording session.
The specialty of Hopto, however, is surprisingly the fast attack. Before, optical compressors may not be able to deal with transiants, but Hopto has successfully tackled the sharp end of guitar, cymbal, and vocal ess. This fast attack mode is able to even the soundwave without sacrificing the sound quality.
The additional sidechain high pass filter broadens the use of Hopto even further. It will refresh your idea about how practical and effective a compressor of this type can be.
